AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS IN PARNELL CAN EASE HOMELESS CRISIS

Dublin West representative Cllr Paul Donnelly has said that the former affordable housing units in the Parnell Estate can ease the homeless crisis.

Cllr Donnelly said “I am convinced that the former affordable housing units in the ParnelPAUL-NEWSl estate can make an impact on the homeless and social housing crisis”.

“I acknowledge that the vast majority of the units are locked into leasing arrangements however those leases will not be in place forever. Fingal County Council have agreed to a review of all the leases and to ascertain how many units will come on stream and when”.

“There is a precedent for turning these units into social housing units in South County Dublin and in Dublin City Council areas”.

“There has been agreement between the Department of the Environment and these local authorities to set aside the loans on these properties and to use the rent to pay the interest”.

“Also in both local authorities the Department of Environment provided funding to buy out existing loans on the units thereby permanently moving them from affordable to social housing”.

“I welcome the housing department’s commitment to look at moving some of these units into social housing however I am very concerned about the timeline”.

“We need to ensure that no more of these units are rented out to the private market and that those families who are trapped in hotels, B&B’s and homeless accommodation are housed as quickly as possible”.
