CUTS TO LONE PARENTS ALLOWANCE WILL HURT FAMILIES

PAUL-NEWSCllr Paul Donnelly has attacked the cuts to the Lone Parent Family allowance, which take effect next week, and has described them as unfair and will hurt families and children.
He also noted that it would affect women and children significantly, and the disadvantaged most of all.
He said;
“Thursday 25th was the last day that lone parents with the youngest child aged 7 received the one parent family payment. Next week they will not receive the one parent family, but the transitional job seekers cut, which will see many of these parents’ payments cut by €87 per week.”

“This cut is a very unfair, vindictive and punitive cut, which will affect a very vulnerable category of people, who are far more likely to suffer disadvantage than the population at large.”

“The people affected here include some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in our community. Figures from the Tenancy Protection Service show that more than 60% of households seeking urgent assistance are lone parent households. These changes may force even more families into poverty.”

I spoke to one parent this week who may have to give up work, a job she loves, because she doesn’t earn enough money to pay for a child minder, She doesn’t have enough hours to qualify for Family Income Supplement and she won’t qualify for Unemployment assistance payments because her hours are Monday to Friday”

“It will affect women and Children disproportionately. When this proposal was first considered, Local TD Joan Burton, the Minister for Social Protection said that it wouldn’t be done until there was a safe affordable and accessible childcare system in place. Clearly that is not in place.”
“When Fianna Fáil first cut child benefit Labour attacked it without reservation. This is now the 8th successive cut to Child Benefit, and it is an indictment of Labour’s role in Government.PAUL-NEWS
